Listen or Die! An Interview about Community with Pete Davis. Part 1

I did this interview a while back, but I can't imagine a more important time to release it. Robert Putnam is a political scientist, Harvard Professor, previous head of the American Political Science Association (near and dear to my heart because they gave me a prize once), and recipient of the National Humanities Medal, which President Obama (himself a student of Bob's) placed around his neck. You may have heard of him – you may have heard of Bowling Alone, which is his most famous book. In a nutshell, it's about how America is falling apart because American social networks are falling apart. It is perhaps the single most influential book in my own journey of becoming a social scientist – and a network specialist.
Pete Davis – another one of Bob's students – decided to make a film about Bob, and his work. And I learned about this because Alexandra Petri told me about it when I met her at a book fair. (Thanks Alexandra! Your column is hilarious!) She thought that Pete and I would have a lot to talk about – and we did!

I thought that two 20-minute episodes would be better than one 40-minute one, but if you'd prefer the whole thing in one bite just let me know. Learning! Always learning. But either way, enjoy!

And watch the movie! Seriously, it's great.
